Johnson Creek

Length: 2.4  mile (one way)

Difficulty: Difficult

Surface: Dirt

Access:

From  Powers continue south, following signs to China Flat, Illahe, Agness; the  route becomes Forest Service Road #33.  A little over 12 miles out of  Powers is China Flat Campground.  At China Flat, turn right (west) on Forest Service (FS) Road #3353,  following a sign to Butler Bar Campground.  Just over three miles is a “Y”  with FS Road #5591, turn left on this road.  The trailhead is located down a  little spur road on the right hand side down a little spur road just after  you cross the Johnson Creek Bridge, less than a mile down the 5591  road.

Setting and Attractions:

The trail winds  through undisturbed stands of old-growth forest.  A primitive campsite is located  about 1.5 before the FS #260 Road, below the trail.  The trail crosses a large slide  area, about which stories tell a number of miners who perished years ago  in it’s destructive path.

Trail description:

At  the beginning of the trail it’s necessary to ford Sucker Creek which is  not possible during the winter months, as heavy rains may raise the level  of the creek enough to make crossing hazardous.  A number of creeks and springs  across the trail as it follows the Sucker Creek and continues uphill to FS  Road #260.
