Tahkenitch  Creek

Length: 3.5  mile (loop)

Difficulty: Moderate

Surface: Sand

Access:  From Reedsport, drive 9 miles  north on US 101 to the Tahkenitch Trailhead located on the west side of US  101.

Setting  and Attractions: The  trail system crosses through dunes, several types of coastal forests,  marshes, deflation plains, and meadows.  The sand near the creek is a  perfect place to look for evidence of wildlife.  Tracks of alligator lizard, bear,  raccoon, otter, mink, and shorebirds are discernible in the sand. As you  hike, watch for glimpses of scenic, tranquil Tahkenitch Creek.  In the distance, parabola dunes  sharply contrast wit the dark green of surrounding forests.

·Trail  description: There  are three separate loops within this trail system (see Tahkenitch Dunes  and Threemile Lake Trails).  After crossing the bridge over Tahkenitch Creek there are trail  signs to help determine your location. Area will be treated with  Glysophate for control of European beach grass June 22and  September 15.  A portion of  the trail is closed between March 15 and September 15 to protect the  Western Snow Plover, a small (6-7 inch) sandwiched colored bird that is  protected under the Endangered Species Act. Please watch for signs that  border nesting habitat, and keep your dogs on leashes.
